Originally, Totara began as an ambitious startup in 2011 with a clear purpose: giving organisations the freedom to shape their learning technology without being locked into inflexible systems. Since then, we’ve helped evolve workforce development around the globe, with thousands of employers using our platform to train millions of users. Today, our customers range from small companies to multinational corporations, government agencies, and organisations in highly regulated sectors.
As a result, these organisations rely on us to support mission-critical training where failure isn’t an option. To meet this need, our platform includes Totara Learn, Totara Perform, and Totara Mobile. At the same time, with offices in the UK, US, and New Zealand, we’ve built robust functionality that adapts to complex organisational structures.
Finally, we deliver Totara through a network of more than 75 certified partners who provide local implementation expertise. As a result, organisations benefit from an open code base that allows them to configure workflows, connect existing HR systems, and build learning experiences around their own processes.

Why are we called Totara?
Totara plants a tree for every customer.
Totara is working with Trees That Count to mitigate our climate impact and help protect New Zealand’s biodiversity.
As a result, we’ve funded 3,750 native Tōtara tree plantings — one for each customer to date — on the Banks Peninsula of New Zealand’s South Island. Moreover, we’ll add a new tree for every future customer.
Consequently, these trees will absorb more than 4,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next century. To put that into perspective, just three native trees can offset a year’s worth of household electricity consumption.
Trees That Count focus on planting the right tree, in the right place, for the right purpose. This lines up with how we try to approach our software development, and the effect we want to have on the world as a forward-focused company. A good thing all round! 🌱
