Totara began as an ambitious startup in 2011, giving people the freedom to shape their e-learning choices through a democratic ethos. Now we’re helping evolve talent development around the globe, with our products used by thousands of employers to train millions of users. Customers range from small not-for-profits to the largest multinational corporations, a testament to our value, flexibility and scalability.

Totara helps Amazon, the world’s biggest e-commerce platform, use their Alexa Academy to train up to 300,000 retail staff. easyJet, one of Europe’s leading airlines, adapted Totara to deliver a tailored onboarding experience for all new employees. Totara plays a vital role across the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), including 350,000 nurses learning new skills to address the Covid 19 crisis.

Why are we called Totara?

The Tōtara tree is native to New Zealand (where we were founded), and has long been revered by Māori, the indigenous people, for its flexibility, strength and durability – properties we strive to emulate at Totara.

Totara plants a tree for every customer.

Totara is working with Trees That Count to mitigate our climate impact and help protect New Zealand’s biodiversity. We’re doing this by funding 3,000 native Tōtara tree plantings (one for each of our customers so far) on the Banks Peninsula of the South Island, and will keep adding a new tree for every future customer.

As these beauties grow they’ll absorb more than 4,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next century – to give you an idea, 3 native trees can offset a year’s worth of household electricity consumption.

Trees That Count are focused on planting the right tree, in the right place, for the right purpose. This lines up with how we try to approach our software development, and the effect we want to have on the world as a forward-focused company. A good thing all round!
