ALLPLAN Learn Now: Building a Global Learning Hub for the AEC Industry

ALLPLAN is a global provider of innovative methods and technologies for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. As part of the Nemetschek Group, ALLPLAN offers Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions that elevate digital construction practices. Globally, over 240,000 professionals rely on ALLPLAN for specialist knowledge across the entire “Design to Build” lifecycle—from initial concept to final delivery.

The Challenge

ALLPLAN set out to create a modern, interactive, and multilingual learning platform—ALLPLAN Learn Now—designed to serve a diverse audience of customers, prospects, and students. The goal was to empower learners with the skills to use ALLPLAN software effectively by offering how-to content and interactive courses aligned with the full “Design to Build” process.

As a global company, ALLPLAN needed a platform that could deliver region-specific content tailored to local languages and requirements.

A key challenge was the desire to embed learning activities with rich, context-relevant resources—such as knowledge articles, tutorial videos, recorded webinars, and technical documentation—making it easier for learners to find the answers they need, exactly when they need them.

Additionally, integration with internal systems such as Salesforce and Connect was critical to streamline administration, automate workflows, and minimize maintenance demands. Given the platform’s complexity and reach, clear ownership and responsibilities for platform management also had to be established.

Finally, ALLPLAN needed tiered access rights to support an upselling strategy. By offering free trial access to some content, they aimed to engage new users and generate interest in premium offerings.

The Solution

Totara proved to be the ideal solution, offering a flexible learning platform that supports both structured and social learning through Totara Learn. With integrated language packs, multi-tenancy, and granular audience targeting, Totara met ALLPLAN’s global and multilingual requirements.

The platform was developed in close collaboration with ALLPLAN over several expansion phases. A cross-functional team—including experts in content development, marketing, instructional design, UX, and technical implementation—helped deliver a holistic, learner-centered platform.

Phase One:
We launched a fully integrated platform connected to ALLPLAN’s Connect customer master data system. With single sign-on and data synchronization, customer attributes like subscription level could be used to control access to specific content—enabling targeted upselling.

Both guests and registered users could explore selected courses and resources, with the option to upgrade for full access to premium content.

Phase Two:
We enhanced the integration of Totara Engage within Totara Learn to make content discovery more intuitive and connected to the ALLPLAN product ecosystem. Engage resources were developed as reusable learning objects embedded directly in courses. These included:

  • How-to content (custom resource type)

    • Tutorial videos (streamed or uploaded)

    • Knowledge articles (automatically imported from Salesforce)

    • Recorded webinars

    • Technical documentation (PDF)

Other enhancements included:

  • Custom metadata (language, country, product version, topic, access level)

  • Dynamic audience targeting based on attributes

  • Faceted search powered by SOLR for faster content discovery

Phase Three:

In the final rollout phase, the platform was extended internationally, supporting eight languages across multiple subsidiaries. This required harmonizing processes, aligning governance across countries, and coordinating updates centrally.

To manage this complexity, a hybrid administration model was introduced. A central core team—working with Totara Partner Arrabiata—handles platform development and support, while local teams manage regional content and branding using Totara’s multitenancy feature.

A key user network across headquarters and country teams ensures smooth communication and shared best practices.

Additional technical enhancements included:

  • Engage resource plug-in: allowing Engage assets to be added as course activities

  • Automated content updates via Salesforce integration

The Results

ALLPLAN Learn Now now supports over 11,000 registered users across 50+ countries, offering 130+ courses and 4,300+ how-to resources in 8 languages. The platform has become a cornerstone of ALLPLAN’s digital ecosystem, empowering learners while contributing to brand loyalty and customer success.

By focusing the content strategy on practical, user-centric learning, ALLPLAN has not only improved product adoption but also supported upselling efforts—providing clear business value.

The platform is also fully compliant with key privacy regulations, including the GDPR and CCPA, with transparent data policies available in multiple languages.
